Description
Sunbeam church was built in 1905 in St. Lawrence, SD. In 1914 it was decided that Sunbeam would pay $12.00 toward the preachers buggy and in 1916 a piano was purchased. The church maintained a Cradle Roll, organized in 1914. Over the years, at least 150 babies were rocked in the cradle. According to the records, the first ones married in the church were Robert Grey and Beulah Story in 1940. In 1947 pews were bought and it was wired for electricity in 1949. Sunbeam Church celebrated its Golden Jubilee October 9 and 10, 1954. About 115 persons had been received as member and 95 children and adults had been baptized. There were 44 people that were present members at the time of the celebration. In the fall of 1972, it was decided to discontinue services at the church. After the church was no longer used, the stained glass windows were boarded over and the church stands as a memorial of time gone by.

What wonderful history! Beautiful capture, Mary. I bet Beulah was one of your ancestors... V/F
Mary Carol Story replied:
Thanks, Carol! You would win that bet. Beulah was my husband's first cousin. :-)

This is such a pretty place; nice and peaceful; I like colors in the sky and how the grass matches the building

A fine old church in its day, I'm sure, and a social as well as a spiritual home for its members out there on the prairie. Lovely shot, Mary Carol.

Great allaround but it creeps into great the way the roof and the field are basically the same color!

I love this old church. Reminds me of the church in Nebraska that used to belong to my family. F/V
Mary Carol Story replied:
Thanks, Jim! Someone actually bought it and was supposed to move it. They removed the stained glass windows and never returned for the rest of it.
